Phew! Spring is in the air and the events are filling up our calendars. From field trips to enrichment opportunities like the spelling bee, reading month and LEGO building at recess, we are sure to make many memories with our students over the next few months of school. Be sure to check the Brown School calendar when planning events & notify the kitchen and transportation in advance when planning special opportunities for your class.

Lego “Night” - Hybrid Format

Lego Night will not be held in person this year for families.  Instead, we are offering a virtual option like last year AND we will be offering build time during lunch recesses on February 22nd and 23rd for any interested students.  We will still be giving away some fun prizes, so be sure to check out our Lego Night website!  Students who choose to participate during their lunch hour do not need to fill out an online form for the prize drawings.

Schedule:

Tuesday (22nd) - 3rd, 4th, and 5th grades

Wednesday (23rd) - Y5/K, 1st, and 2nd grades

Save the date! The district PTOs are bringing Dr. Grant back to SJPS for families (and staff, if interested in attending). This free event will be amazing!

Why Teachers Matter What your students believe about themselves has a powerful impact on their outcomes. Teaching them to recognize and replace negative beliefs is life changing. Thank you for empowering your students in big and small ways every day.

Reason #79: Teachers help us learn to talk to ourselves with kindness.

Grace remembers Mr. Fanning:   "I loved school, except for physical education. I dreaded the days my class would go to P.E. I was good at academics, but I felt clumsy and slow doing anything athletic. One day we had to take a physical fitness test (my nightmare). I started at the pull-up station. After trying for a few seconds, I gave up. My teacher, Mr. Fanning, came over and knelt down next to me. He asked what thoughts were going through my head when I tried to do a pull up. I told him that I just knew I couldn’t do it, that people like me can’t do things like that. He suggested that I kick that negative voice out of my head, and instead, tell myself that I am strong and capable. He said I may not get it right away, but with more empowering self-talk and practice, he just knew I could do it. I figured I had nothing to lose, so I took Mr. Fanning’s advice. I told myself that I was strong, and I practiced. It took a couple of weeks, but I finally did a pull-up. I could hear my teacher cheering from across the gym as if I had won a gold medal. Mr. Fanning’s advice has served me well, way beyond my P.E. class. I learned to catch that negative voice inside my head and stop self-doubt from creeping in. I started to talk to myself with kind and encouraging words. I began to understand that with time and practice, I could do anything I set my mind to. I’ve carried that wisdom through every challenge since, and I’m forever grateful to Mr. Fanning."   Keep going.
