S.E.L. Changes
It is hard to fathom that we are almost to the end of an entire trimester already! With the change in trimester will come some changes for Social Emotional Learning. One of my most favorite parts of my role as a school social worker is providing Tier 1 SEL support to ALL students, but providing this weekly has left a very tricky puzzle to solve when considering how and when to support the 20% of our student body that needs more. A solution that seems to still meet all of our students’ needs, although different from what we are used to, is to do a week on with Tier 1 SEL in your classroom and then a week of Tier 2 SEL support for those students who need another dose, need practice, and/or some very small group instruction. This solution will provide the most consistency for ALL students.
Following the start of a new social emotional competency and beginning 12/13/2021, during your already scheduled classroom SEL time, I will come and gather those 2-4 students in your class that would benefit from a small Tier 2 intervention focused on the area taught the previous week (Self-Awareness, Self-Management, Social Awareness, Relationship Skills, and Responsible Decision Making). Data collected on these Social Emotional Competencies as well as your feedback, and if there was some sort of activity done that might assess the students’ progress, will be considered when identifying students needing intervention every other week.
This will look different for Y5s and Kindergarten. I realize this provides you with a half hour every other week. I am hopeful you will welcome this time and use it for teambuilding and/or some time for Kagan Silly Sports and Games, or any SEL that you recognize your class needs.
Please do not hesitate to reach out if you have any questions or feedback. In order to get this underway, if you could please complete the SEL Competencies and Indicators for your students by 12/03/2021 that will help identify the students in need of this support.
SEL Competencies: Please find your class list here. Scroll through the tabs on the bottom to locate your class. Please try and complete these prior to 12/3/2021 so that groups are ready to begin the week of 12/6/2021.
Updated Tier 1/Tier 2 SEL Calendar
Thank you for being present at your assigned supervision position on time. In addition, please be sure to rotate around the playground. With the construction happening, it can be difficult to scan the field from one spot. Thank you for being mindful of student safety while on duty. We appreciate you!
Lockdown Drill Reminders
Our first lockdown drill of the year is on Tuesday. When preparing your students for this experience, please be sure to keep conversations at a "high level", being careful to keep student worry low. Please don't go too deeply into "what ifs".
For an interior threat drill, blinds should be open, doors should be locked, students should be staged away from view of the classroom door, and the red/green card should be visible on the exterior window. If you are unassigned to a class at that time, please lockdown in your work space. If your teammate has a guest teacher that day, please check with him/her to ensure understanding of the procedures. Let Kristen & Andrew know if you have any questions.
Holiday Shoppe
It's that time of year again! The Holiday Shoppe will operate in the computer lab on December 1st and 2nd. Please sign up for a time that volunteers can help to facilitate a shopping experience with your class here. If you know of a student in need of sponsorship, please let Andrew and Kristen know. We have families interested in helping by donating funds.
