Coach's Corner
I have two reflections this week around clarity. One, I’ve always been a fan of anchor charts because they help teachers communicate clear expectations and are a resource for kids that supports their independence. Anchor charts make life and learning clear, which is kind! Second, words matter. Here are a couple of responses
I've heard teachers say that make it clear their classroom is a brain-friendly safe space.
When a student made a math mistake and the student potentially felt embarrassed.
“No worries about the mistake, that just means you are in your learning zone!”
When a student was reading her presentation out loud and came across an editing mistake
“It’s okay, just read it how you want it to sound.”
What have I been up to:
Supporting teachers’ wonderings- how on task are my kids when I’m working with small groups/conferencing? I observed kids in action and provided data.
Supporting a teacher’s question- how can I get my kids revved about reading? Together we listened to kids read and are planning for increasing student literacy engagement through book clubs.
Supporting teachers as they support their most at-promise students- it takes a village! Together we are digging deep and thinking outside the box.
Above is my upcoming schedule. I go where the work is and I am open to traveling between buildings! I look forward to hearing from you.

Talking to students about the brain is an effective way to help them understand actions and reactions. The video below reframes a trauma perspective in terms of learning brain versus survival brain as a way to make it easier for teachers to talk about trauma with students. Bri came across this at a recent SSW conference. Thank you for sharing this learning with us!
Interior Loop
Dr. Kagan reminds us of the importance of a classroom layout conducive to cooperative learning. In his book, Tools for Teaching, Fred Jones introduces this concept which is supported by Kagan. The loop allows for the teacher to actively listen as students share and process content. This intentionality not only informs engagement and clarity of content, it also allows the teacher to coach and support as needed.
