Brown School Maker Day 2019
We have been busy formulating plans for this year's Maker Day. Thank you for providing feedback last spring so that we can make this experience even more meaningful and interactive for our students.

This year we will divide the experience into two separate half-day sessions. February 28th will be Maker Day for our Y5 - 2nd grade classes with teachers signing up for sessions on a google doc as in past years. On March 1st, our 3rd - 5th grade students will partake in a Maker Day passport adventure - signing up for three sessions that are of interest to them. Connie and Jen will help to facilitate the content/activity preview and sign-up procedure during an early February media center visit.

You will have an opportunity to preview and try a few of the offerings during our February 12th staff meeting.

In effort to make intentional curriculum connections to the experiences, please complete the very brief survey linked below by Wednesday, January 23rd.

Recess Expectations
Thank you for adding your ideas to the recess expectations google form linked here. The Safe & Civil Schools team will collect your contributions and present a draft to staff for consideration at Friday's school improvement workshop. If you haven't had a chance to add your ideas, please do so by Tuesday morning.
Ice Skating with Buddies!
Thanks to our PTO's support, we are able to provide an enrichment opportunity to all of our Y5 - 5th grade students. A schedule is currently being developed in which buddy classes will have the opportunity to travel to Howard Ice Arena to ice skate together on Friday, February 8th. We will be seeking parent volunteer support to meet classes at the ice area to assist with lacing up and skating safely. It is sure to be a great day full of memory-making moments for our students.

I bet you have a great idea for Friday Fun Day team building!
Please share it with Kristen today.

PlayIt Safe! Classroom Presentations

We are partnering with the Childhood Assessment Center to bring the nationally recognized PlayIt Safe! Program to our school.

Play it Safe!® is a child abuse awareness and prevention program that incorporates age-appropriate scripts and movies to teach children how to reduce their risk of sexual and physical abuse, and sexual assault. It teaches them to recognize potentially abusive behavior, provides the tools to respond to threatening situations, and encourages them to report abuse to a trusted adult.

All students in K-5th grade will participate in a lesson designed with content specific to that grade level. Families will be notified of this program through our family blog the week of the events.

Through age-appropriate stories, elementary school students learn to recognize the three kinds of touch and are empowered with tools to respond using the 3-part safety rule if they are ever in an uncomfortable situation. This safety rule can be applied to many situations that students may encounter on a daily basis, such as bullying and online situations, peer pressure, or exploitation by friends/family. The safety rule encourages assertive responses, whether it is used with strangers or someone the child knows and loves.

Several concepts are reinforced throughout the program:

*Most people would never touch a child in an inappropriate way.

*There are three types of touch.

*Use the 3-part safety rule.

*It is NEVER too late to tell.

*Child abuse is NEVER the child’s fault.
