Kagan Corner
Spring fever leaving your groups a bit edgy with each other? Remember that Dr. Kagan suggests teambuilding activities at least twice per week and new seats every six weeks or so.  In addition, try sharing Kagan's "Ten Tips to Be a Good Teammate" with your class (found below and on page 11.8 in the big book).

1. Be a team player.
2. Ask for help.
3. Be a good helper.
4. Keep the team on task.
5. Compliment teammates.
6. Have a positive attitude.
7. Watch teammates.
8. Listen to teammates.
9. Piggyback on each other.
10. Apologize.

The Brown School News parent blog is updated every week.  Some of the content will not always be represented in both blogs, please take a moment to check out the parent blog here.

April is Volunteer Appreciation month.  Please take a moment to honor our many volunteers for their dedication and commitment to helping our students grow.

TECH FEST DEADLINE is MONDAY!
Next, the deadline for tech fest entries is Monday, April 16th.  Please encourage your students to submit something to the festival this year.  Remember, any student who submits a project is entered in a drawing to win an iPad or Chromebook.  Details and information for entering can be found HERE.

We will also be looking for teachers and students who are interested in participating/helping the night of the festival, which is May 11th.  Let Connie or Amy know if you and a couple of your students would be interested in helping out the night of the festival.  We have grade level tables for students to share all the cool techy things they’ve been doing this year!

Helpful Tips and Reminders:
•                     The entry form is located on the media center page, right under the Symbaloo.  Click on the form that pertains to your correct grade level.
•  It will be helpful for you to take a look at the entry form so you know what information your students will need.  They will need to type a brief explanation, provide a learning goal or standard, and choose how they will submit.
•  Most students will likely submit through Google Drive.  Please make sure that they choose to share their project with anyone with the link.
•  Remember only FIVE projects of the same assignment may be submitted for judging with the same teacher sponsor.  Unlimited entries may be showcased.
•  Students may submit up to three projects, but they must be in different categories.

PLACEMENT REQUESTS
This is the time of year teachers may start getting requests or concerns from parents over next year's placement.  As a reminder. . .we never discuss class placement or our teaching colleagues' classrooms in terms of 'best fit' with parents.

Sometimes we do need to inform parents of our process for class placement to put their concerns to rest.   A simple "I'll be working with the other teachers at our grade level to make recommendations for next year. Our goal is balanced classes."  is enough for most parents.

If parents persist,  feel free to forward them our handbook language (below) or direct them to the principal.  All placement requests must be submitted in writing to Kristen.

The following information regarding placement will be included in next week's family blog:

STUDENT PLACEMENT

We try to use our best professional judgment to create balanced classes. We consider the following factors when making class lists:
  • An even distribution of students according to ability;
  • A fair balance of boys and girls in a classroom;
  • A fair distribution of students who demand more care and attention from teacher; and,
  • The mixture of students’ personalities and probable “fit” as a class.

Parents may submit written information for staff to consider for student placement. Specific requests for teachers are not accepted.  All placement requests must be filed with Kristen.
M-STEP Scheduling
Please be advised that this will cause substantial disruption to our computer lab schedule.    All test sessions will be entered on the master google calendar we share to ensure everyone can see them.  Classroom projects should be scheduled for the cart instead of the lab whenever possible.

SJPS Foundation Teacher Grants
