Summer Learning Opportunities for Students
This week we will be focusing on preparing for summer learning opportunities. Classroom teachers are asked to work with grade level colleagues to help identify and prioritize the students we will invite to participate in Summer School, the Summer Book Package Program, and the Learning Lasts! Experience Camp. Directions, criteria, and the beginnings of students lists are in a shared google file. Please devote time on late start to completing these nominations so that all are entered by 3/9/18.
Summer School: Invitational program for around 20 K-2 and 20 3-4 students who are struggling academically August 6-17
Summer Book Package Program: FREE book kits to students who are identified as “At Risk” - child will “shop” at an evening book fair and then receive three “packages” of books (3-4 each). There are many ways a child can be considered at risk, so these kids may be at or beyond grade level with their reading ability but still will receive books. (We are also considering a fee based option for participation for students not identified as at risk)
Learning Lasts! Summer Experience: A summer literacy and experience camp sponsored by the SJPS Foundation. 90 of our current district-wide 2nd - 4th graders will receive theme based literature and go on three field trips this summer (zoo, SB cubs game, and nature experience). Priority will be given to under resourced students who have limited experiences.
Lexia!
We will have roving subs on March 15th so that every grade level team can work with Lana, our Lexia Data Coach, to determine next steps in Core5 use, as well as answer our questions and introduce us to additional resources. It is imperitive that your students have logged on and are using the program so that you can work with their data. This is an amazing tool - please ensure that you are incorporating into your Daily 5 block, or that you are having a Lexia use time as a whole class. We will roll it out to parents next week.
Please also be sure to celebrate your students success with them by printing their certificates (it's even allowed to print them in color :) ). In addition, we will begin having students write their name on a die-cut yellow star (a stack will be in your mailboxes next week). These will be posted in the entrance way around signs that say, "Leveling Up with Lexia". This whole school recognition will encourage students to keep up their hard work as it leads to reading growth and success.
Here is the schedule for March 15th:
8:15-9:15 Y5/Kindergarten
9:30-10:30 5th grade
10:45-11:45 4th grade
12:30-1:30 Third grade
1:45-2:45 1st grade
3:00-4:00 2nd grade
*She will also be available to answer your questions after school.
