New MITECS Released
The State of Michigan recently released Michigan Integrated Technology Competencies for Students (MITECS) an updated set of tech competencies designed to increase the focus on learning enhanced by technology, rather than on technology tools themselves.   The MITECS are aligned to the Top 10 in 10 focus area of Learner-Centered Supports, reflecting a learner-driven approach that empowers students to be active participants in determining their educational pursuits.  The MITECS support learning in all content areas and reinforce the belief technology should no longer be taught as a separate class, but rather integrated across the content areas enhancing learning.   We’re proud of our approach here in SJPS and at our school because we’re are already taking this approach to teaching technology. Kudos to all of you for embracing the power of technology in your classrooms and for all you do each week to bring authentic learning experiences to our students.

Foundation Board Approves $90,403 in Grants
17 Grant Applicants were notified last week that  their proposals had been approved by the SJPS Foundation Board.  Recipients have 12 months to spend their Special Fund Grants which are awarded in October and February each year. Congratulations to Connie, Colette, and Amy Dirlam who all received funds for projects that impact the elementary students. Brown School was also awarded a grant to take a team to Solution Tree's PLC Institute in Lincolnshire this summer.

MSTEP
The MSTEP window opens as soon as we are back from Spring Break.  Please take some time to get familiar with what the test format looks like for your grade level this year. While we will not practice for the test at our school, it is important that you are aware of key format changes and that students are familiar with tools.

Test Accomodations

Designated Supports and Accommodations Supports are sorted into three categories:
Universal Tools –available to all students (see email from Kristen)
Designated Supports – supports designated by a teacher or administrator who works with the student
Accommodations –supports that require designation by an Individualized Education Program (IEP) or Section 504 plan

Foundation Photo Contest
Entries are due March 30th.  Check out the Photo Contest Flyer for details.
