Welcome to Brown School, Brooklynn!
Brooklyn is working with Kim this semester as she completes her student teaching through Western Michigan University. We are so happy to have you working and learning alongside us!
Lexia Reading Core5We are overjoyed to share that we've secured a pilot of a supplemental reading program called Lexia Reading Core5 for all K-5 students throughout the district for the remainder of the school year. This promises to be a more robust solution in helping us to address our students' literacy needs. Schools in our area and throughout the country are having huge success through its use. You will receive more information about the program and how it might be utilized at our next technology meeting, but until then check it here.
Perceptual Data Surveys and Next Steps
Many thanks for completing the staff perceptual data survey, and for creating opportunities for your students to complete them as well. Kent, Sarah, Kim, Elizabeth and I look forward to sharing the information gathered at our next SI meeting.
Midyear Testing
In effort to monitor growth and progress towards our goals, all K-5 SJPS students will take the midyear NWEA reading and math tests this year. The testing window will be from January 22nd-February 1st. Second-fifth grade students will take the tests on Chromebooks in their classrooms, while Kindergarteners and first-graders will use the computer lab. Please see email for further directions. Your grade level may also want to be thinking about when you plan to begin midyear F & P running records for all readers. A great idea that was recently shared with us is to use one of your Daily Five rounds to conduct a running record on one or students over the course of a few weeks so that your guided reading instruction does not have to cease for all readers during the testing window.
A special thank you to all of you who so generously offered to help with Kindness Week 2018. Stephanie, Jen and Connie have put together a fabulous week for all of us. We are looking forward to a week "bursting with kindness".

Every student will get a "Burst of Kindness" notecard to leave behind after performing an act of kindness.
Kindness checklists distributed to students
Monday/Tuesday: Stephanie and Jen will be in the M.C. during first recess for any students who choose to come down and make "good luck" notes for middle and high school students who are taking finals.
Wednesday: Tech team and student council reps will give out Starbursts in the cross-hall to students as a reminder to share a burst of kindness.
Thursday: Write a kind card for a Caretel resident in the M.C. at last recess
Friday: Dream of Kindness- pajama day
*Daily kindness quotes will be featured on the news daily as well as on the scrolling news. There will also be a kindness bulletin board in the Media Center featuring kindness quotes from popular children's literature, and Sheli is teaching a song about kindness to all students.
MAKER DAY 2018
Plans are underway for Maker Day to be held on February 2nd. There will be a full day options available for you to sign your class up for. We would love for you to select at least 2 or 3 options that work for your schedule. A Google doc will be coming soon via an email link.
MEEMIC Grants
Scholastic C.L.A.S.S. survey and Next Steps
Thank you for completing the Scholastic C.L.A.S.S. survey earlier this school year. The results were used to inform our purchase of book sets for all 1st-3rd classroom libraries throughout the district thanks to a generous SJPS Foundation grant. We hope to have new books in our students' hands very soon. We are exploring funding options to equip our Kindergarten, Fourth, and Fifth grade classrooms with additional titles as well. Stay tuned...
