Social Emotional Learning (SEL) Grade Level Check-ins
Colette will make grade level rounds on the following late start days to check in with your team about students who may need additional social emotional support and overall progress with these concepts at your grade level. October 4, November 1, November 29, December 13, February 28, March 14, April 18, and May 9. Please plan on her being with your grade level team for eight minutes per the following schedule: 8:15 Y5/Kdg; 8:25 1st; 8:35 2nd; 8:45 3rd; 8:55 4th; 9:05 5th. Colette will be in communication with you in advance of these visits so that your time is well spent and efficient.
Late Start Resources
Thank you for taking the time to create/recommit to your team norms and common commitments at last week's late start. The meeting minute documents and team compacts can be found in the Brown School Staff shared folder in Google, under the "Late Start Meeting Minutes" folder. Please be sure to make a copy of the master document each week, then save yours in your grade level's folder.
Half Days & Specials
This year we will be trying something new to help equalize the impact of half days on students' art, music, and p.e. learning. On the following half days, we'll run the p.m. schedule in the a.m.. Exact times and details will come closer to our first occurrence. Please make a note in your calendars and be mindful when scheduling field trips, etc. Thank you!

SUSPECTED CHILD ABUSE OR NEGLECT
School employees are mandatory reporters of abuse and neglect. The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services website is your go-to guide to help in defining abuse and neglect, identifying signs, and learning how to make a report. The report of suspected abuse or neglect is the individual staff member’s responsibility - not a team or administrative decision. If you have students who you feel may be suffering from abuse or neglect, you are obligated by law to make a report. The Mandated Reporter Guide may be useful to you as well.
Tips for Making a Report
It can be uncomfortable to make the call but the staff at the centralized intake number is there to help you. They will ask for specific information / concerns you have about the child. Plan ahead for what you are going to say. Stick to the facts and do not embellish with wonderings or worries. Answer the questions to the best of your ability. It is okay to say “I don’t know” or “not to my knowledge” . Summarize these same facts, without judgement words or phrases, on the 3200 form. As a matter of protocol, if you make a report, the 3200 must be filed in the office with the log number that you receive on the phone.
Parent Rights
It is the parents’ right to hear what the concerns reported were - not who reported it but what was said. Sometimes parents deduce that it was a member of our school staff based on what is said or written on the 3200. If a parent calls school following a DHS visit, generally the building principal takes the call to inform the parent that school staff are mandatory reports and will handle the call. We will not confirm who made the report for the parent.
FALL CONFERENCES
Our goal for Fall Parent-Teacher conferences is 100% attendance. Conferences can be scheduled anytime October 9th - November 10th. Please prioritize new students, those at or below the 30%ile on NWEA, and those for whom you have the greatest levels of academic, social or emotion concern for October conference appointments.
